Sporty's Health: Exercising For Weight Loss

    Last updated 1 year ago

With the abundance of options available for weight loss – supplements, diets, pills, creams and even surgery – it is difficult to know who to trust and which will be effective for you. In truth, weight loss comes down to a simple equation: calories consumed need to be less than calories burnt. How you create this deficit is up to you, but by far the healthiest and most effective way to lose weight is by creating new habits: eating a healthy, balanced diet and getting plenty of exercise.

When it comes to exercising for weight loss, there are three main types of exercise that you should incorporate into your training routine – aerobic training, resistance training and flexibility. Depending on your fitness level, the exercise types, times and intensity will vary, so you should always consult with a qualified fitness trainer before embarking on an exercise program.

Walking, jogging, swimming and team sports like football are known as aerobic or ‘cardio’ activities. These types of activities strengthen and improve your cardiovascular system and are great for weight loss. They burn up excess calories stored in your body as energy during your workout.

Resistance training (weight training) has many health benefits and is as effective as aerobic exercise at burning calories. Resistance training improves your overall muscle strength and size, which means you’ll be burning excess fat long after your workout has finished. A combination of light to moderate resistance training and cardio is ideal for adults wanting to lose weight and decrease their body fat percentage.

Along with aerobic and resistance exercises you should include flexibility training and stretching routines in your exercise regime. For optimum performance and comfort, and to avoid injuries, you need to gently stretch your muscles before and after exercise to return them to their normal length.

Sporty's Health: The Effects Of Nicotine

    Last updated 1 year ago

Nicotine is a naturally occurring substance found in the tobacco plant. It is an ingredient used in cigarettes and is what makes them both pleasurable to smoke and addictive.

When you inhale smoke from a cigarette, a large amount of nicotine is drawn into your lungs and transferred to your blood where it travels to your brain. In the brain, nicotine causes the release of chemicals that give you feelings of pleasure and relax you for a short period of time. It is this rapid delivery of nicotine to the brain that gives you a buzz or rush from smoking.

Nicotine initially causes a rapid release of the hormone adrenaline, increasing your heartbeat, blood pressure and breathing rate. Adrenaline also tells your body to release glucose stores into your blood while simultaneously blocking the release of the hormone insulin, creating a sugar ‘high’. Nicotine only has a half-life of about 60 minutes, so a short time after a cigarette you will need another to create the same ‘high’.  This is why people keep smoking cigarettes throughout the day - to maintain a steady level of nicotine in their bodies.

As you continue to smoke over a period of time, the brain changes and starts to expect nicotine. Your brain even grows new receptors that thrive on nicotine. When you quit smoking, your receptors no longer get the nicotine they need, and demand more – these withdrawal symptoms and cravings are what makes quitting smoking so difficult for many people. There are, however, nicotine replacement courses that you can undergo to help you quit smoking, as well as many other options.

Sporty's Health: Tips For Beginner Bodybuilders

    Last updated 1 year ago

With all of the training, nutrition and supplementation advice available, the world of bodybuilding can be a minefield for beginners. If you want to get bigger and stronger but “super-sets”, “creatine monohydrate” and “hypertrophy” sound like something of a foreign language to you, you may benefit from the following advice.

    1. Speak to a trainer and have them outline a training routine geared toward your level. At this stage, a full-body, strength building routine is likely to be most effective. This type of workout includes working on all of the major muscle groups in your body (arms, back, chest, legs, and abdominals) three-four times per week, doing two-three sets of about eight-12 repetitions. Spend time building strength now, so that you can lift more later.
    2. Proteins are the building blocks of our body and consuming protein powder supplements or shakes can be useful in achieving lean muscle mass.
    3. Increase your intake of dietary protein to aid in muscle repair and simultaneously help to reduce your body fat. Enjoy lean meats and dairy along with lots of fresh fruit, vegetables and carbohydrates for energy.
    4. Explore different exercises and avoid the tendency to focus on just one muscle group. Many beginners focus entirely on their chest and arms, at the expense of their legs, core and back. This is an error and merely results in postural and muscular imbalances later on.
    5. Don’t forget cardio! Lifting weights isn’t everything. A couple of light cardio sessions each week will help to reduce your body fat percentage, making your muscles more visible, as well as all of the other great benefits aerobic exercise provides your body.
    6. Always warm up well, stretch, get adequate rest and adhere to proper technique to prevent injury.

Remember that bodybuilding takes time, so be patient. For more help with bodybuilding supplements, protein supplements and nutrition, contact Sporty’s Health Gold Coast on 07 55316734.

Sporty's Health: The Benefits of Adding Yoga To Your Training Routine

    Last updated 1 year ago

As opposed to some training regimes that can lead to the overdevelopment of a particular muscle group, yoga tones and strengthens your body all over. It will also simultaneously improve your balance, flexibility, reduce your chance of injury and lower your stress. Whether you are training for weight loss, strength, or even bodybuilding, yoga can be a valuable addition to your training routine.

Traditionally, the purpose of performing yoga postures is to prepare the body for meditation, but it offers many more physical benefits:

    • Increased flexibility
    • Increased lubrication of joints, ligaments and tendons
    • Massaging the body's internal organs
    • Detoxifying the body
    • Toning the muscles

Yoga exercises can strengthen problem joints such as the knees, hips and ankles. They can also lead to increased spinal flexibility and core strength, both of which can reduce lower back pain and increase your overall physical strength.

Some forms of vinyasa yoga - ashtanga yoga, power yoga, and hot yoga - can raise your heart rate and burn fat, aiding in weight loss. Yoga training even stimulates your internal organs which helps prevent disease by maintaining organ health.

Yoga training also offers a number of emotional and psychological benefits. Yoga exercises, postures and meditations increase your powers of mental concentration and can significantly reduce your levels of stress and anxiety.

Yoga can be used alongside any kind of training programme. Whether it is body building, endurance sports or weight loss, you will find incorporating yoga into your training of benefit.
